Ernst and Grace Matthaei Scholarship

Established by a bequest from Grace Moran Matthaei in 1982, the Ernst and Grace Matthaei Scholarship is available to students who are undertaking graduate research training in the optical field or problems related to optics.

The University may award one or more scholarships per year.


Benefits

The maximum duration of the Ernst and Grace Matthaei Scholarship is 2 years (full time equivalent) for students undertaking a Master by research degree and 3.5 years (full-time equivalent) for students undertaking a Doctorate by research degree.

The following benefits apply:

  • living allowance (stipend) paid fortnightly
  • relocation allowance for students who are living outside Victoria
  • limited paid sick, maternity and parental leave

Eligibility

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

  • either:
    • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Master by research or Doctoral degree at the University of Melbourne, or
    • be currently enrolled in a research degree at the University of Melbourne and have at least 12 months (full-time equivalent) of candidature remaining
  • undertake research related to optics, in particular study in genetics, botany, zoology, geology, microbiology or biochemistry, and
  • have not already completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought

You must submit an online application for the Ernst and Grace Matthew Scholarship.

Selection

Eligible candidates are selected on the basis of academic merit and other factors relevant to the proposed research, such as professional experience, refereed publications or specialist medical qualifications.

Outcome

All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application via email by the end of January.
