MDHS Indigenous Research Training Support Scheme

This scholarship is open to Indigenous postgraduate research students enrolled in or seeking to enrol in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. This scheme is available to currently enrolled indigenous graduate researchers who are experiencing financial need. Up to $36,000 is available for award annually. The maximum amount awarded per individual is normally $10,000 however the Committee will consider applications for greater amounts based on financial need.


This scholarship is only open to Indigenous students of Australia. Indigenous applicants from other countries are ineligible to apply.

Recipients of 2016 MDHS Indigenous Research Training Support Scheme are ineligible to apply for 2017 scheme.

To be considered for this scholarship, you must be:

  • an Indigenous Australian enrolled or seeking to enrol in a research higher degree of the University of Melbourne, and at an academic unit of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
  • Applicants who have commenced their graduate research degree must have at least 12 months full-time or part-time equivalent candidature remaining.
  • satisfy the faculty's eligibility standards for course and scholarship.
  • Students with the following status are ineligible for this scheme:
  • Lapsed
  • Withdrawn
  • Completed
  • Under Examination
  • Discontinued
  • Applications must not be for equipment purchases or other costs associated with the research project.

A committee chaired by the Associate Dean (Indigenous Development) will select the recipients based on need. Currently enrolled students must show satisfactory academic progress in the degree.

Selection for the MDHS Indigenous Research Training Support Scheme is based on following criteria:

  • Academic merit, as demonstrated by previous academic achievement
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Likely success in completing the proposed course of study
  • Strength of supporting documentation


Successful candidates will be advised of the outcome  within five weeks from the application closing date.
